Hi. I'm trying to simplify this: 36/B=(36/30-B)-1. How am I supposed to do this? I know how to cross multiply, but im not sure how to do it if there are two fractions on one side. I know that the completely simplified answer is B^2+42B-1080=0, if that helps. Please help me! Thanks

Steve A is correct. I realize now what I needed to do: Just find a least common denominator and mulitply both sides by that. The LCD in this case is B(30-B).

36/B=(36/30-B)-1
36/B=(18)/(15B) - (B^2)/B -B/B

If B does not equal zero,

36=(18)/(15) - (B^2) -B

B^2 + B +36 - 18/15

Well,

its about like any other algebraic equality

you simplify by doing the SAME thing to both sides thereby maintaining the equality

you choose the operations that will simplify (which usually starts with getting all the variables together.

I would start by multiplying both sides by "B", this results in:
36=36/30B-B^2-B

now we have a 30 in a denominator, to get rid of that lets multiply through by 30 giving:

30*36=36B-30B^2-30B

combine the B's and you have

1080=6B-30B^2

putting in the more common form

30B^2-6B+1080=0

I get a different answer than you have, maybe you should double check.

Add B to both sides of the equation. That gets rid of the B on the right side 36/B+B=(36/30)-1. Then times it all by B. That gets rid of the B on the left side 36+B=(36B/30)-B. Then times everything by 30. 1080+30B=36B-B. Collect terms. 1080+30B=35B. Then minus 30B. 1080=5B. Condense. B=216. Which is not the answer you gave. How sure are you of that answer? Either your wrong, I'm wrong and/or I misread the question.

36/B=(36/(30-B))-1
Multiply all terms by B(30-B)
36(30-B) = 36B - B(30-B)
1080 - 36B = 36B - 30B + B^2
0 = B^2 +42B +1080

I guess you mean 36/b = 36/30 - b -1...mult every term by b...then...36=36b/30 - b^2 -b..then mult every term by 30...then..1080=36b - 30b^2 -30b --->30b^2 - 6b +1080=0.
