Practice accents and movements. Like pretend your a hilly billy, how would they walk, talk, and appear. Try to pretend your a high class women (The queen) how would she walk and appear to the outside person, also get some lines from a play and run through them with a partner. Or watch movies, Pick and actress or actor and study the diverse roles they play and how to change to play them

I'll list some (I like to list =P):
.Get monologues from the web, monologue books (You can buy these at most book stores), novels, movies, tv shows, etc.
.There are a lot of impov games you canplay, look at my answer to this question: http://ca.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AhjSNfvCAI0EvaCjkBooXUzBFQx.?qid=20070626115444AAOTWCR&show=7#profile-info-4Mu9M1xUaa
.Put on puppet shows or skits for younger kids =)
.Act out scenes with friends, maybe film yourself! Fun fun.
.Practise facial expressions in the mirror (Make sure no one's watching you or you will look like a complete idiot...)
.Tape yourself saying a monologue or acting out a scene by yourself and see if you can improve your voice.
.Lie to your parents. Not really big lies, just small ones. See if it convinces them =P
.Practise your "character movements" in the mirror in infont of friends or family. First make up a character and practise walking or body language that they would use.
Thats all I can think of at the moment! Break a leg!

Enroll in acting class if you want to be a professional actor. One would only "try out for a play," if one wants to be an actor, which obviously you DO NOT!

Adopt a different personality each day (or one for several days) and do they'r expressions and movements, you can do it from a friend (and if you have a very theatrical friend, better) or a character from a movie or play.

Find monologues online, memorize them and put all your effort into making the character come to life. It's like memorizing a script.

There is a certain method of acting you can do by yourself but I forgot what it was called. You can get a book about it.
