I think that someone could only get away with that in the 1800's.

If you tried it today you would only end up in the looney bin in the USA, and Shot in Mexico.

But cool artical, I had never heard of him before.

Emperor Norton in San Francisco already did this. He was homeless and fed by everyone affluent and kind. There was an Emperor Norton Treasure Hunt back in the early 1960's named for him with clues in the Chronicle Newspaper, and many people joined in to win a "Pot of Gold."

Whyt Not - - - - though according to the Patriot Act there is only one Emperor and his name is Geo W - - - - that said, if you have it in your head that you ought to be announced as 'Emperor' what would it hurt? If you have the funds, oraganize a shadow government, issue stamps & coinagae, make a big noise about it. It could be a real regular hoot.

Pax---

PS the Norton story ought to be filmed .. couldn't we get the old fun Nick Nolte to take a shot at a film, though in truth Jon Voight would be better casting !!

Why not? I'll have to check on Joshua Norton. The person I was thinking of seems to consider himself the latest reincarnation of Julius Caesar - and I VOTED for him!!

Don't you want to be king of Beaver Island like Joseph Smith? I personally think that sounds so much more fun.

Real eccentrics never ask such questions. They do as they do because it never occurs to them to do otherwise. If they do think about it, it's the others who are out of step.
