Its about being different and not being accepted for it. Though it is not a true story many people during the late 60' and 70's did live this type of lifestyle.

Most simply stated it is about what true freedom means, the problems you encounter seeking it and the price you have to pay to finally achieve it.
It was not based on a true story but there were a few people who travelled around seeking enlightenment in the sixties such as Jack Kerouac.
