If you mean movies aboput prison I like the following: "Papillion" with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, great flick, "Shawshank Redemption", "Defiant Ones", "Birdman of Alcatraz", "Midnight Express" all great flicks.

They are usually called 'dramas', such as 'Cool Hand Luke' or 'Shawshank Redemption'.
Sometimes they are called 'comedies', such as 'Life' or 'Stir Crazy'.
Sometimes they are called 'action', such as 'In Hell'.
Lots of different 'kinds' of movies relate to jails in America. Did you mean for us to name 'movies about American jails'?
