I have a Snapper lawn tractor with what appears to be a dead battery. Can I use my car battery to charge it or is that a voltage issue that would result in more harm than good? It looks like a simple enough solution, but a voice in the back of my head suggested I double check. Anyone, any clue??

Not a real good idea, though it will work in a pinch.
The problems:

* 'Charging` voltage should be about 15V.
A fully charged battery puts out less than 14V.

*Charging ampereage for a small battery like a lawn tractors should be 2-3 Amp.s
A car battery will put out 20 or 30 into the load posed by a weak lawn tractor battery.

The results:
You discharge the large battery too fast, heating the small battery too much. You get inefficient charging, and if the small battery is in deep discharge you can damage both batterys.

Fix the charger on the tractor.

Depends on the battery in the tractor. If it is a 12 volt battery yes you can jump start it. But to charge it it would best be put on a charger on the lowest amperage setting. A high amp charging can cause the bettery to sulfate and then it would need to be replaced.

My father hated to buy new batteries for his lawn mower so whenever it would die he jumped it with his truck. We never had a problem jumpstarting a tractor battery just be sure you hook them up correctly and good luck

There should be a switch on your charger - be sure it is a 12 volt battery if there is no 6 volt setting.

When it reads zero it is charged.

You could also "JUMP" it with 12 volt just to start it.

It would be better to use a battery charger.
