When I posed this question to a liberal friend she said' "I work hard for my money".

I reread my question and it still seems to be a question for liberals not cons.

They don't want to give their own money to the poor, they want to give someone elses money to them, because they have more than they (liberals) do, and it's not "fair".

bombs away needs to take a basic economics course. People like him/her have no understanding of how the world works.
Corporations, even after tax breaks, are responsible for the vast majority of taxes to the gov't, one way or another.

I didn't know so many people cared more about their money than a living human being. You people that think it's ok to shun the poor and say it's their fault are so ignorant. Would it kill you to buy a homeless person a meal? I hope some day that you or somebody you love loses their job, their car and their home. Then we will see where you stand on the issue of tax money helping the poor. Wouldn't it be better to use that money to feed the poor instead of keeping our troops in the middle of a civil war?

Agreed. I donate often. And while we're on taxes, when will we lift the tax exempt status of churches and put them on par with the rest of us who give to charity. By the way. What's a liberal? I have liberal thoughts on some issues, conservative thoughts on others, like business and the economy. What the hell is a liberal anyway. Or a conservative for that matter.

she works haard for the money so you better treat her riggght!!

Wow what a lame reply, like I guess that means all others don't work hard??

I agree with your sentiments. Welfare also doesn't provide for all the poor. There are restrictions.

People donate sometimes to make themselves feel good but that organization they've donated to spend more of that money keeping their organization going than to the poor. Then you have habitat for humanity that I'm proud of. American Red Cross, proud of.

I don't think alot of people really understand that not all poor people get on welfare and it's because they are turned away even though they are dirt poor. Some caseworkers like to play God and they will use your age against you, your race etc..

I'm sure that considering citizens aren't heartless that if we didn't tax, there would be alot of community effort to pitch in for the poor just like what we already have.

Think about Hurricane Katrina, how many citizens chipped in to help? How many citizens even opened their doors to their homes to those who needed shelter? What did Fema do? Eventually after being guilted into giving money they did but then did so resentfully and the media put a negative spin on it by blowing up a few people's spending habits to make all look bad. Talking about insensitivity, does anyone remember how the govt wanted to send all hurricane Katrina survivors on a cruise ship?? Yeah like if you just survived a flood you want to see more water!

Also, why with all the donations to Africa are children still starving? Where does that money go? I've heard of corrupt politicians hording the money and using it to feed only those that will vote for them. I find that to be rather exploitative and people don't want to hear that but if you were a corrupt politician getting alot of money because your people are poor, would you keep them poor to keep the money supply pouring in??

Taxes don't all go directly toward the poor anyway. Taxes pay for social services that private organizations don't meet.

police
fire department
road construction
post office
education
parks
military
provincial administration

Among others. Every American benefits from those taxpayer-funded programs, not just the poor.

And I don't donate much money to the poor. I volunteer my time and skills, which are more valuable.

Because the taxes you pay to the IRS are not for your system or for your poors but for the richs!! Those who control your federal banks are stealing everybody!
But you are lucky, as socialists countries are paying much more taxes then Americans. And sadly its not by giving money to the poors that you will help them, they need to be educated and developed a proper social behavior, in which case, helping them, is like trowing money by the window!!

I do donate. I give to my church and other assorted charities. Please explain to me how the USA calls it good thinking to borrow from the Chinese to pay for tax cuts for the very wealthy and this war? Who, pray tell, do you think will end up paying for that? Elves? fairies? I would whole lot rather have schools improved or health coverage for children than see 363 TONS of cash sent to Iraq and simply disappear......with no accountability from Bush and his bunch. I too work hard for my money and I pay my taxes that I should pay. I am glad to do that because I am an American citizen and it is our duty. But.....to see that money squandered with no bid contracts like Halliburton whose profit line went up by 800% makes me a wee bit angry.

It's a difference in philosophy.

Looking the goals listed in the Preamble to the Constitution, one of them is "Promote the general Welfare" -- that means take care of the community and the population.

What exactly that entails is subject to debate. But many believe that the role of any community should be, first and foremost, to make sure that all members of that community are provided for, especially if they can't do it for themselves.

Personally, I'm more cutthroat. I believe in the "life free or die" model, where each person either sinks or swims on their own. If people want to contribute charity, that's their choice. But the govt shouldn't force it.

One of the many reasons why I'm not a Democrat.

The next time a liberal espouses the redistribution of wealth mantra, ask them:

If you were a college student who studied hard and got good grades in order to have a good career after you graduate, and therefore had a 4.0 gpa, would you give away part of your gpa to your roomie who spent all their time partying and got poor grades? None of them would even think of doing that, but they are certainly in favor of taking away your hard earned money to give to someone who's personal habits make holding a job an impossibility.

Which corporation do you give your money to?
Ah, you say they don't need your money? But the government gives it to them anyway.
In my tax money I don't mind making sure every child is educated and people are healthy.
It makes for a strong nation.
You can't get ahead being uneducated or sick.
Do you know that our infant mortality is one of the worst in the industrialized world?
At one time, republicans actually cared about this. Not anymore it seems.
