I been a cheerleader for 5 years and am now going into high school and still cheering. The things that you should know are:
1. Spirit~ you got to have spirit to be a good cheerleader that is one of the most important things.
2. Smile~ you have to smile that's one way to show your school spirit and that you are having fun but it can't be fake because there are many people who can tell a fake smile from a real one.
3. Cooperation~ in cheerleading there is always something new you can learn or something you can learn to make better, so you got to be ready learn. Also cheerleading can become very dangerous especially during stunts so you have to have full attention to what your doing.
4. Flexibility~ part of being a cheerleader is being flexible. The one thing I learned is if you can do a split everything else is not that hard to accomplish.
5.Fun~ you have to have fun(not to much fun). If your not having fun at the games and compitions why so the crowd have fun and participate with cheers and chants?!?!
So remember these five things and you should be good to go!!
Hope this helps!!

hey! well im going into 9th grade and i just made my JV cheer squad.
You will probably find out more information because most schools hold CLINICS before the acutal tryouts.clinics last from about 2-4 days. and it teaches you jumps, the cheers, chants, and dance moves that you will have to do at the tryouts in order to make the team. to gurantee a spot on the team: you must have:
1) School Spirit
2) A great smile, not a Fake one
3) Flexibility and leg strength
4) Cooperation
What judges look for at tryotus are confidence. If you make a mistake, your not supposed to cry and run away. You pretend like that mistake did not happen and continue with whatever routine you were just doing. Make sure you smile! that is very very important. Your movements also have to stiff and straight. No wobbly high V's or anything like that.
Basically, you will soon find more information if you keep looking into it and if you really want to make the team, then it will show. You also have to have a great attitude because people look up to cheerleaders in their school.
Also: what kind of cheer is your cheer squad?
if it is: competitional then if you have no cheer experience it will be pretty much rare luck that you make it in. because competitional cheer squads are serious and compete all over the place and you have to have a LOT LOT of cheer experience.
if it is spirit (like mine): you will probably compete in about at least 2 compettions (like mine haha) and your mostly there to cheer on major sports like basketball and football. that is why it is called spirit!
so i hope you get it. i already love cheerleading it is fun but it requires a LOT of time. so if you dont have time, i reccommend not trying out.
Tip: you MIGHT get intimidated by other girls, but what i think about is myself and instead of watching other girls and thinking omg they are soo making it! just think about yourself. Dont have tooo much confidence but have enough so that the judges could see it clearly! and also make eye contact!
GOOD LUCK!

some things to know-
practice your movements in a mirror, make sure you are stiff and hitting all the right angles.
depending on schools depends on your tumbling-
i'd say starting jr. high probably just the basic cartwheel and maybe a roundoff.
Jumps, you will need to work hard to get them high and looking good. Go to about.com for drills to help. (after u go to about.com click on sports, from there cheerleading, then to jumps, then click on a link. :) )
kicks- work on getting your leg up there without bending and stuff, there are a couple kinds of kicks, to view them look at about.com some more...
splits- get them lower and feet pointed - good stretches on about.com and try split pushups (pretty self explanitory)
ummm.thats all i can think of right now...have fun...and any more questions email me at cheergurl_rae_2010@yahoo.com
