I think the book is for 9th graders, and the general idea of the book is:
a. Don't judge a book by its cover- When referring to people, this is like saying don't conclude that a person is weird or outcast by their looks, but, instead, put yourself into their position, and view the world as they would view it.
b. A big theme in this book is also the unjustness of racism, which eventually leads to innocent Tom Robinson's capture, and soon, his death.
Hope this helps.

To tell you the truth, I studied the book in 8th grade, and recieved a 98% on my final. I missed this exact question--what is the main event of the story. Here's the question, as I recall from my memory:

What is the main event of Lee's TKAM?
a. Scout's gradual acceptance of Boo Radley (or something along the lines.)
b. Jem's coming of age.
c. Tom Robinson's trial
d. All of the above

I put A, without reading the rest. As it turns out, D is the correct answer.

The level is basically 7th-12th grade, but the truth is that it's for every age group. My mother read it when she was nine, in Romania. My English teacher read it a year after graduating college.

This book is universal, and I hope I helped you understand that.

my teacher had us read this book last year in 10th grade. its a good story. really sad. the main event would probably be how Tom Robinson was sent to court and said to be guilty of a crime he was obviously unable to commit. but he was jailed anyway because he was black and was accused by a white.
