A poem, like any piece of creative writing, may express, inform, or persuade. In addition, since it is a creative work, it should entertain in some way or another -- via content, observation, image, sound, etc. Finally, it should be universal enough to engage readers. Without that, it is merely a diary entry.
Robert Frost said that poems should begin in delight and end in wisdom. I agree in essence but would alter the saying slightly to :
Good poems bring delight to readers while offering them something interesting to think about.

I like Lionel Trilling's definition, "A poem is a boxed explosion." Poetry has always been one of my main means of expression. It gets a lot said in a little space. It also works well with music.
The poem's main aim is the spirit behind the words, a genie in a jar, something alive and moving.

Those who write poems have meaning to them selves or about someone they know.
I am attracted to a poem that I can identify with, unless it is just a cleaver or humors poem that most all enjoy.
Poem writers are a lot like song writers. They write of their joy or heart ache or their good or bad times in life.
Thanks for the question.

I think the main point of any poem really varies. It could be to make the reader think or maybe to prove a point. It can also be a way of expressing a particular feeling or emotion.

An artist (true artist) will not give you an answer to this Q.
The verse they will chant is pure art which exists for itself.
You are asking:
Why exists love?
Why exists hate?
Why exist colours?
Why exist humans?
It's like LOVE.
It exists for be given to.
You'll be lucky to accept it, to fruit it, to keep it, to be spoilt by it, but it's not yours!
LOVE is in the heart of THE ONE who chose you (...), as long as they will consider it so ...
That's why we are so sorry when they are stepping back ...
But what can we do more than we already did (well or badly)? To take their heart out of them - IT IS OURS !!! ?? No. It is theirs!
Poems are theirs, too. Are their feelings expressed ...
What can we do? Accept them, keep them, be spoilt by them, but ... they are not made exactly for us ... with maybe few exceptions.
Poems are just a expression of our potential like any other art. They don't need to connect precisely with a particular person, but need of course a switch ... (exactly like the feeling of love needing some switch to be lighten - some flirt, whatsoever?)
