I have a 18 foot cuddy, with a mercruiser 470, and it run fine for about a alf hour, and then i idled it down, and put it in reverse and it died. we paddled it back to te dock and got it out of te water and onto the trailer and we removed the bottom plug and tere was a steady stream of water, like a garden hose for like a few mins. the was no coolent in the water at all, i am aware that these engines do leak coolent, but the cooling system is new. and im talking like gallons of water. and i cant see ware its coming from, is it being pumped in througt the engine?, or is it maybe coming in through from ware the lower drive mounts to the boat?, the transom right? so any ideas thanks, oh and there was no water in the boat befor we started, so please help

as have owned a boat it is normal for your boat to have some water in the haul this is do to small leaks (this is why you have a sub pump to suck water out wile driving)if it is a lot of water you need to pull the boat out and before removing the plug look for leaks baylinner's are know ed for easy to crack hauls.next time you buy a boat and do your self a favor and buy a out board as inboard/outboards are a pain to do anything with, out board motors are cheaper and easier to replace

If the hull is good then most likely you have a ujoint bellows or shift cable bellows that is cracked and leaking.
One of your problems you mentioned was stalling in reverse. Thats one of the first signs of a lower shift cable going bad. thats the one that runs out to the outdrive. After time they build up resistance which in turn makes the intermittant shift switch hang up and kill the engine.
While replacing it you will be doing the shift cable bellows so that will have to come off anyhow. Have them look at the ujoint bellows also . If its split open there is also a chance the ujoints and gimbal bearing had its grease washed out. Which will require replacing.
The only other spot at the back could be the upper steering shaft seal but you would have had the motor under water if that leaked because thats the highest point on transom

Hook the hose an start it up if no leaks. Take to the boat ramp an leave it on the trailer an put in the water see if you can find the leak might be the rubber boot on the out drive won't leak unless it's in the water. Good luck bring a flash light. look under the Eng on the transom. Also check the exhaust boots for holes?

Check the cooling system while in your driveway. Use a set of the "muffs" on the lower unit and hook them to a garden hose. Start the engine and see if any water gets in the boat. If all is well, you might look at the bellows that the drive shaft is housed in. I have a 470 also, my motor and I have a "love/hate" relationship, I'm sure you know what I am talking about. Good luck.

If you can not find a leak after using the muffs as recomended by a previous answer you may have to use the garden hose to add water to the inside of your hull. You will have to watch out as water is heavy so don't add to much. Then inspect the underside of your boat to look for leaks. you may also want to check all the fittings on your heat exchanger and the plumbing to the leg. If your boat is fiberglass you will have to look for small cracks and if it is aluminum look for loose rivets.

MMMM, one way ti find it would be to have it on a trailer, and put your hose in the boat and run several gallons of water inside and see where it comes out from. Easier than trying to peer down inside the hull. It that is intact it must be coming from the coolant pump somewhere.

If it is an inboard engine, there will always be some water leaking in from the propeller shaft packing. That is normal.
Otherwise have your boat surveyed and inspected for hull damage.
Good luck

We had the same problem, come to find out there were a couple of rivets at the bottom of the boat (hidden from the eye!) that were loose and some fallen out. Good luck!

It has a leak somewhere. Check all the through the bow fittings for loosness and also check the bottom for holes and cracks.
