The median is the middle number after the numbers have been put in numerical order. If there is an even number then you average the two middle numbers.

This is a simple case with an odd number of terms already in order so its easy to see its 23.

Median is the value for which 50% of the numbers are larger and 50% are smaller. 23 is the median because 8, 9, and 12 are smaller than 23 and 31, 37, and 47 are larger than 23.

First order all the numbers from least to greatest (you have already done that).

The median is either the middle number (if you have an odd number of data), or the mean of the two middle numbers if you have an even number of data.

You have an odd number. The median is 23.
