Go to the newsagent and and select a computer magazine, that has a disk. Some stick it on the front, others include it in the pages. Very often these disk contain security software, and you get a deal on it because you buy the magazine.

This is one of the best ways of getting security software, as often there is a little blurb about it in the magazine. Although they always caution, the magazine are going not going to deliberately distribute infected ware.

Not all of the programs on the disk are free, and not all are worth the space on your hard drive, and you may have to search a bit to find the magazine that is focusing on security this month.

What is happening is that these programs are starting as you start up, and cleverly are not in your start up folder so you can't delete it from there, but a good anti spy program will be able to zap or disable them.

You can always check by opening the process tab of your task manager. If you want to remove them manually, you will first have to end process, so they are not running, otherwise when you run the delete program wizard in the control panel, you will get a program running message.

I notice that other respondents have recommended programs, which will give you a clues as to the names to look for on these computer magazine disks

spam = unwanted email, so spammers have not infested your computer.

Why do you believe deleting temporary files will remove these adverts?

The likelihood is that these are caused by BHOs (Browser Help Objects) which attach themselves to your browser. Download HijackThis and run a scan. Check the BHO section and put a check mark next to suspicious entries and click the Fix Items button.

It is common that so called anti spyware software etc have free trials which actually infest your pc to encourage you to but full versions. Only download trusted software, AVG is highly recommended anti Virus, Ad Aware and Search and Destroy are quite high profile and I haven't heard of much in the way of problems with users, although you might have to temporarily disable virus scan when using them.
