"Forest City" - Its unclear where exactly this name came from, but when the most striking feature of the landscape when the city was founded must have been the extensive deciduous forest. There are no mountains, significant hills, wetlands, or plains. The whole city and surrounding suburbs have been built admist a forest. All the city neighborhood streets are lined with trees. When you look out from the top of a downtown skyscraper you can barely tell that there are homes in the city, because it all just looks like a forest. Even though other cities have tree-lined streets, I have never seen anything quite like Cleveland when I look from observation decks in other cities. As far as I know no other city would be known so well as "Forest City."
"Sixth City"- A nickname given because at one point it was the sixth largest city in the nation like "Second City" for Chicago.
"Best Location in the Nation" - A slogan initially used in the first half of the twentieth century when the city proclaimed its location as the reason for its economic prosperity. Cleveland is the largest city between New York and Chicago, on the shores of Lake Erie (one of the largest bodies of fresh water) and was connected to the Ohio River via the Ohio-Erie Canal. Cleveland was an obvious choice for new industry and manufacturing plants because its location provided for easy distribution. Something like 40-50% of the U.S. population lives within 500 miles of the city.
"Mistake on the Lake" - This slogan slowly took over the former "Best Location in the Nation". Embarrassment over pollution and the fire on the Cuyahoga (even though Cleveland was not the only to have its waterways catch fire), replaced the former pride in the economy from heavy industry.
"Metropolis" - One could allude to Metropolis in Superman comics to refer to Cleveland. The creators were from Cleveland and used the city as inspiration. A lot of the crime and political corruption in the comics may have been taken from Cleveland newspapers. The "tall building" depicted in the comics as the one Superman "leaps in a single bound" bears a striking resemblance to the AT&T building. The Daily Planet sounds somewhat similiar to Cleveland's paper The Plain Dealer.
