I have never written a research paper. I'm so confused at how to start it or even how to do my broad topic.

A topic is the subject about which you are going to write. A broad topic is one that can be broken down into smaller, more refined topics. For example, dogs would be a broad topic, with Labrador retriever being a more narrow topic, and black Labrador retrievers being even more narrow. As for whether it should be in essay form, that depends on the instructions for the assignment. Some teachers and professors just want a topic, while others want an explanation of the topic, possible information sources, how you intend to research, and what you are hoping to learn or find through the course of the research paper.

Broad topics are usually best handled in essay form--sorry to disappoint you. Tell the instructor that the assignment wasn't clear to you. You need to know what they want before you start because there's nothing worse than doing something and (A) You have to do it again because it was totally wrong or (B) You possibly get an "F" because you did the assigment wrong. If you still need help after you find out the particulars of what the instructor wants, post this again with what they told you. We'll help if we can, ok?

Are you doing this as a class assignment? If so, hasn't your professor or teacher gone over the subject with the class? Or were you sleeping? In any event, consult your teacher and ask him/her to give you further instructions. It would appear that it would be done in essay form, but I can't say for sure with such little information. As to the subject matter, it could be on just about anything, unless you were given a choice of topics to write about.
