not too much time is spent out of the water. my little ones go for about 2 to 3 hours a day. but my larger one will bask for hours if no one bothers him. yours just might be shy.

Red-ear Sliders never become land turtles. At all phases of their lives, they will get out of water to bask in warm sunshine and may occasionally get out to find new territories or dig nests, but they spend most of their lives in or near water.

RES are mainly aquatic turtles, and don't usually spend much time on land. They leave water to bask and lay eggs, and to search for better territories, but that's about it.
