There are so many great things to do around Phoenix that are cheap..
Drive the Apache Trail
Hike- Sedona, Four Peaks, Around AJ, Southern Arizona
Tonto Natural Bridge
Drive Mt Lemmon in Tucson, go to Mission del Bac
Rent a boat at Tempe Town Lake and cruise around
There are tons of art festivals- they are especially good in Scottsdale
Go to Mexico- just drive down, park your car, walk across...
Stay for a weekend in Puerto Pensasco- super quick/cheap vacation!
Desert Botancial Garden (especially their christmas program)
ASU has lots of plays and such that you can go to. Many times there is a soft opening that is free.

Depends on what you are looking for specifically.
Phoenix has a lot to do. If you want shows, sporting events, things like that, pick up a Phoenix New Times. It will list all price ranges of activites going on.
For the everyday looking for something to do, during the summer, it should be inside. If not, there are the waterparks: Waterworld, Sunsplash, and Big Surf. Good way to cool off during the summer (be sure to bring swim shoes or you WILL burn your feet and sunsreen of course).
My fiance and I enjoy Arizona Mills in Tempe. It has a lot shopping, GameWorks, Harkins Theaters and an IMAX. We go out there and make a whole day of it. The only cost is what you decide to spend on.
Desert Ridge in Paradise Valley/Scottsdale area is nice. Theaters, shopping, entertainment.
Hope this helps you out. :)

If you are looking for good places to live Laveen is close to everything and very affordable.
If you are looking for restaurants, Matta's in Mesa has great Mexican food & so does Tia Rosa's. For great local pizza Barros pizza, they have them scattered around the Valley. The Fish House in Phoenix has good but pricey seafood.
If you are looking for places to travel and visit in Arizona my husband and I love to go fishing at all the lakes up in Payson. Payson is about a two hour drive from the valley and is much cooler than it is here in the valley. The hotels there are mostly ok and affordable. I hope this has helped you.

I love to visit there. My favorite spots include Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon, both very expensive to live in. Flagstaff is great, it is a college town with nearby skiing. Also has a wonderful planitarium and railroad center. Also a great jumpoff for the Grand Canyon. Just remember droughts are common in Arizona.

If you are looking for restaurants Mattas is an excellent choice for Mexican food. Red White and Brew offers a variety of foods, but has really good pizza. For entertainment there is the new Cinemark that just opened that is a new clean theatre.

Flagstaff is amazing. I lived there for 12 years and loved it. The summer and winter are the best times to visit... skiing and cool summers!

You should visit Lake Powell and swim there. My family went there a few years ago and it was gorgeous-the perfect temperature and beautiful water, plus lots of lizards sunbathing on the rocks...it's sooo nice there.
