how many hours does western box turtle sleep and do they sleep with their eyes open or closed?

Western, or Ornate Box Turtles, Terrepena ornata, sleep at night (in hiding, eyes closed), and during the warm parts of the day, and whenever they are not doing something more interesting. They will usually sleep in some form of shelter with their eyes closed.
It is not unusual for a turtle to sleep all night and another 10 hours a day some days, then barely sleep others. Part of it has to do with how interesting or suitable the habitat is. Hot or cold spaces cause them to sleep more, for example.

Do you know what kind of turtles you have? All turtles sleep. Just sometimes not at the same time we do.

all turtles sleep with thier eyes closed. and if the lights are out, they will more and likley sleep.
