I mean the rest of the world refer to soccer as futebal or football, so how did the word soccer even come about...

The correct name of the game is Association Football. The word soccer is a slang word that comes from the word, as(SOC)iation with an extra c and er put on the end. The American game was derived from a game called RUGBY FOOTBALL. The Americans obviously dropped the RUGBY part, whereas in England they have dropped the FOOTBALL part. So no matter what our colonial friends call it, the correct name is FOOTBALL.

We like soccer but it's not or top sport but getting more popular . With Football Americans like seeing higher scoring and more action in games and th games be relatively less than 3-4 hours people .

As someone pointed out, we already used the word "football" for another game.

Quick research shows the word soccer comes from an abbreviation of the the term "association football"

My best guess is because the US has an entirely different game called Football...can't call them both the same thing.

Good question. I'm sure it's because of American football that caught on here first. Had to give it a different name.
