Iron or mild steel can be protected against rusting by paint, grease, plastic or tin or chromium plating (barrier methods) or by sacrificial protection, coating it with a more reactive metal such as zinc (galvanising).

What is commonly done is grease or some type of oil is put on the metal and the air cannot penetrate it. An example not necessarily to do with corrosion but its the same principle would be sodium. Sodium metal is stored in parrafin oil so the air, which contains water vapor, does not come into contact with it which will ignite the sodium metal.

certain polishes and finishes can prevent oxidation and corrosion. It depends on the conditions/elements the metal is exposed to

there isn't real protection when coating one metal with another metal, you just coat the metal you want to protect with a a metal that's easier to reduce, a sacrificial anode.
