We used to make a device that is now available at many home improvement stores. Take a piece of plastic similar to that used for banding cartons closed and on to pallets. This should be about 1/2 wide max and about 18" long. cut a point at one and and then cut a 1/4 inch notch into it (like a barb on a fish hook) about every inch and at about a 45 degree angle. these notches should go about 10" up. The other end is the top and you should find a way to form a 2' loop for holding on to. Wiggle and feed this thing as far down the drain as you can and when you pull it out it will be totally covered with hair and such. Every little notch will have captured something. Use a paper towel and wipe from the bottom up to clean it off. Be prepared to make a new one about once a year or so. Or you can look around and find it at the store. Many professional management companies use this before attempting more extreme measures because in showers and sinks 90 percent of the time its hair and slime.
Good luck and have fun!

The shower drain pipe isn't too hard to get into - couple of screws here and there. You might also consider going for the gooseneck if it's readily available.

Once in, I use what looks like a foot long tweezer. Probably a bent up wire hanger would work, too. Save your pipes some wear and tear and go for the obvious here. Once the gunky stuff is out, do the baking soda / vinegar route to clean out the rest.

Good luck!

Put a handfull of baking soda into the drain and pour a glass of vinegar on top. Cover tightly for 5-10minutes and you should be good to go.

Try some Drain-O gel. You pour it down and let set, after a few minutes, run some hot water down. This is what I use on mine. It will help wash the hair down also.

Draincare by Zep is an enzyme drain cleaner. No caustic ingredients. Enzyme cleaners cling to and "eat" organic clogs. Read and follow label directions for best results.
