well mainly history. it was the first real organized sport in the u.s. it predates all other leagues by at least 30 years.
in its defense baseball is a sport that needs to be watched in person. on tv it's barely passable. not much more interesting than golf. true baseball is a sport of intricacies. double steals, sacrifice bunts, pitching strategy, etc. much of the modern game has gotten away from that in favor of long ball home runs and 100mph gas pitchers. but true baseball is small ball. and teams that play small ball are the most interesting ones to watch. sadly, there's only a few teams that still do.
all that being said, even live baseball can be boring. i think they need to institute some new rules to speed the game along. time limits for throwing pitches would be great like they have for the severs in tennis. a limit to the number of times a pitcher can throw to first to hold a runner. after so many they should be penalized. either let your catcher try to throw him out or let him steal the base.

If you don't know anything about any sport you watch you'll probably find it boring. Baseball involves a great deal of strategy and mental game. When you consider the average score of soccer game to the average score of baseball game you'll notice more runs are scored in baseball. To most red-blooded Americans soccer is boring because the games are low scoring, the players take dives, there are very few shots on goal, and games can end in ties. In major league baseball there are never ties, players don't fall down intentionally, and the game itself is faster. Now most people think baseball is not faster because of the moments in between action but that's incorrect. The average major league fastball is 90 mph. Most balls hit at players are in the upper 90s to over 100 mph. What you have to understand about the in between action moments are where the strategy of baseball comes in i.e. calling pitches, stealing signs, giving signs, shifting position, making adjustments etc etc. Baseball involves a great deal of mental game, strategy, and hand eye cordination unlike soccer.

Baseball may be the most exciting game in the world because it's natural speed allows an incredible amount of real tension to develop and anybody who has competently seduced a woman knows that tension is very exciting.
To prove my point - Find a copy of the 1986 World Series Game 6 and either watch the game-if you can sit still that long -or just watch the last inning . That inning may be the most exciting thing that you will ever see in any sport.
After you watch that, re-post and tell us how you loved it.

That's like asking why the rest of the world loves soccer (sorry - football to them). It seems incredibly boring to most of us here.
It really helps the enjoyment of any game if you know the rules, strategies, and history of the game. For most of us in the US, baseball is anything but boring.

If you want to understand why baseball is so exciting, play it.
Nothing else can give you a better answer.
If you just want to sit back and be informed try to find "Baseball", the 9-part documentary series by Ken Burns.

For one it is our national pasttime. It has the most history and tradition of any of our sports. Also most of us grew up with the games with our families. At gettogethers and family reunions it is not uncommon to see everyone get together for a game. Ever heard the phrase 'as American as Baseball and Apple Pie'? That should sum it up right there.

Not all do. My American friends haven't the slightest interest in baseball. Asking that is like saying that all Britons love soccer, which also isn't true.

It's America's past-time. I've answered this question too many times to really thoroughly explain myself. You'd have to go to a game to see what it's like. The home runs, stolen bases, etc, are all fist-pumping explosive.
