Ok I'm going to be graphic here. My penis has been erect for a long time now, and it will not go down!
No this is not some joke punchline, and its getting painful. I'm not even thinking about sexual things at all now anymore, and I haven't taken any viagra or anything like that. And yet it just stays erect, continually, and it won't go down. I am definitely going to see a doctor about it, but I don't know just how urgent this is. It would make sense if I'd taken some drug or something, but this is wierd.
How long before this becomes something serious?
And what is the mechanism or dangers exactly?

It's called Priapism! The Painful erection.
Erection is usually cherished by men as the incarnation of their sexual power and its stability and duration as a sign of sexual athletism. Unfortunately, there is a condition called painful erection (priapism) the erection of which is far from pleasant. It can cause men serious sufferings and may even lead to impotence. Fortunately this ailment is rather rare. It may happen at every age, usually after a long-lasting and energetic sexual intercourse, after urination or defecation.
The member erects suddenly and stays so for hours on. The pain appears about the 24-th to the 42-th hour. The glans becomes blue. The patient is scared. It's interesting that the urination is painless and the erection brings no pleasure.
Priapism is an emergency because with time irreversible changes take place in the penis - connective tissue spreads and it becomes hard and incapable of erection. The erection subsides without treatment about a week after the onset.
The treatment:
Most convenient is to put ice on the penis.
In hospital, different medicaments can be injected into the member.
Surgically, the blood (the principal cause for the erection) from it may be taken out.
One of the surgical techniques consists of creating a communication betweenan arterial and a venous vessel. If this communication doesn't eventually obliterate on its own, the man becomes impotent.
Priapism may occur in a healthy man and also when inflammatory and vascular disease is present.
Briefly: If an erection persists over 24 hours, beware!

Your condition is called Priapism. Have a look at the wiki page (especially read the bit in complications where it talks about penis removal).
You should see your doctor - for preference go to an emergency department.
Things that can do this - recreational drugs such as speed, cocaine, ecstasy
- medications designed for erectile dysfunction such as viagra, prostaglandin injections or inhaler medication

This is called priapism. It can damage your penis permanently, because the blood keeping your penis erect is stagnant. Not enough oxygen is reaching the cells in your penis, and they can die.
If this has been going on for four hours or more, you should go to an Emergency Room. (Possibly an Urgent Care clinic could help, but you should call them first to ask so you don't waste your time there.)

its a very serious problem after about 4 hours erect. The erectiuon is caused by blood filling a chamber in the penis. After many hours that blood I believe can begin to clot.
Go to a hospital emergency room if your doctor is not available.
It is very urgent. !!!

Its called priaprism - where the penis remains engorged with blood and will not go back to the flaccid state. Go see a doctor about this. Its a serious medical condition.

Do not wait to go to the doctor. Go to the Emergency Room now. My wife is an Emergency Room nurse. I can't explain why it's urgent, but she says that it is serious and needs immediate medical attention.
