I just gave birth to my daughter May 15th (Shes about 2 months old now, obviously) and was very diligent about not having sex during the whole 6 week postpartum period. However, my willpower didn't last too much longer after that and I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend when my daughter was 7 weeks old and then once more when she turned 8 weeks old (Shame on me, I know..save the lectures please). I'm not really sure if I've gotten my period back as of yet, I bled continously for about the first 5 weeks after the birth and then on and off until about 7 weeks and I'm not breastfeeding. Is it really true that its extremely easy to get pregnant again right after having a baby? (Kind of the preheated oven theory, I guess) And if so, when would I begin to take a pregnancy test? Like I mentioned, I've been bleeding so often lately that I've lost track of what a period should really be like. Should I just stick it out and hope I get my period?

It is different for everyone. Some people are very fertile shortly after giving birth, some aren't. I am confused as to the length of bleeding. If the total time you bled was 7 weeks, then you have had no bleeding since July 3rd. When you aren't breast feeding, your period can return in as little as 4 to 6 weeks so your period could have come and, due to the timing, you thought you were still bleeding from the delivery. Also, often the first period after delivery occurs without ovulation!

If the additional weeks of bleeding were more than very light in amount or spotting, chances that you are pregnant again are probably very slim. In fact, if your hormones are already returning to normal, you should be entering your fertile time any day now provided you normally are on a 28 day cycle. Just remember, giving birth can throw your hormones out of whack meaning you can go months without a cycle, be very irregular or even ovulate earlier than what would be normal for you.

So, my advice would be to wait until the beginning of August and, if you haven't gotten your period, to do a pregnancy test at that time. However, if you think you have the symptoms of pregnancy, then don't wait...have the test to know for sure.

i would stick it out and wait. i mean, you just had a baby. i would think that you period would be off schedule and sort of messed up. there is that possibility though...
