The only people who want to open a restaurant are the ones who have not tried it yet. All of your management expertise, culinary acumen and people skills will not make a business survive. Location, location, location...The good ones are not for sale, but can be leased, for a high price. Bad locations are the ones for sale all over town.

Draw up a business plan with as much detail as possible (type of food, proposed premises, budgets etc) This will help you sort out many of the kinks before you start. You will also be forced to think through many minor details that are important. Remeber to set a good budget - everything from your vegetables to toiletpaper to staff salaries!
Get quotes for services, equipment and consumables you will be using. Remember to find out what licences you need (alcohol etc) and of course you will need to comply to food&health regulations.
Check out your supplier before you start. Are they reliable? Do the comply to food& health regulations? How is their quality and price?
When your business plan is complete you should have a brilliant idea of what having a restaurant means. It will also show banks that you have a realistic view of your business needs in terms of finance.
Once you have the money and your premises you just need to implement your business plan :-) So decorate, complete that menue, hire some staff and do some marketing. Good luck!

I would first take a culinary course and learn about food costs, cross-contamination & Sanitation. Also a course in business. It takes a lot of effort to open a restaurant, unless your fortunate enough to buy one that is ready to just open the doors. You have to get all sorts of permits, insurance for your restaurant, workmen's compensation insurance, health permits, etc. You will spend approx. 70 to 80 hours a week there. You have to because employee's will steal, and waste food. You have to be so careful of your profit margin to make money running a restaurant.

A lot of times there are shows you can go to and they have info about it. Look up prices on items, find a small place and make sure you are commited to it. Look up Restaurant Shows on Yahoo! or Google and it will surely come up.
Best of luck!

you could try looking for a place that was a restraunt that's for sale. Sometimes they leave some of the grills and ovens and other stuff there.
Make sure you aren't spending too much
And don't pick a place that is in the middle of no where
Location is Key
