I would have to reply that it does depend on what subject matter to which you are referring. I live in the Bible Belt. Many people here can quote you scripture verse by verse, chapter by chapter.
Some people here can perform mathematical calculations quickly and accurately. There are people in my small town of about 5,000 that have performed with Patsy Cline or Red Foley and know a great deal about music - you just would be hard pressed to stump them.
However, my small town is so ignorant in one area that at times I have been tempted to move away. This town is not at all color blind. I do not like to see prejudice. I consider this the worst kind of ignorance - one that will take many, many years to overcome. In this respect my town is 95% ignorant.
I apologize for my entire town.

Probably 20% of the people in my town consider themselves to be ignorant, but I wish it was 100%.
All of us are ignorant in some way, and there's nothing wrong with being ignorant, just in fooling ourselves into thinking we aren't ignorant.
Like Socrates used to say, 'everyone is my superior in at least one way.' If we all recognized our ignorance, then at least we can start to do something about it.
In a different sense, being ignorant is not as bad as acting ignorant. For example, if you don't know very much about the peoples and cultures that exist in the world, but you're always willing to learn new things when the opportunities come up, then that's not nearly as bad as being an ignorant person in a diverse community (say, Oakland California) who treats different people poorly because they think they know what the different people are 'really' like.
So to summarize, we're all ignorant in some way, but if we choose to fight that ignorance then that will help us be the best person we can be. Someday I hope to be that kind of person myself :/
