Postnatal bleeding, known as Lochia, is due to the area where the placenta attached, this is where you bleed from. It can vary with each pregnancy. Usually its heaviest and/or lasts longest with 1st babies. You can have small clots but if you are in a lot of pain with any clots, big or small, it generally signifies a womb infection and your uterus will not retract as quickly as it should. Antibiotics rectify this. However, the flow of blood can vary also and not signify infection. Just by having a busier day (ie as one lady said, she went shopping or you couldve been up and down all day with baby or cleaning the house) the flow of blood can increase when you thought prior to this it was subsiding. With a 1st baby, it can take a good 5-6 weeks to stop altogether and will change colours too from dark brown to bright red and also consistency. As you only had your baby 9 days ago, I would say your experience is normal. There is no harm in mentioning it your gp or midwife though for safety. Lots of people on here can scare you into thinking you are in danger, generally that is very rare. I hope this has eased your mind a little. Congratulations on your baby and good luck x

Sounds normal to me. I had this happen, and the explanation I got was when you are resting, it has a chance to pool and then when you stand up it all falls out. The throbbing is probably all the bruising coming out, it's a pain, but take some paracetamol and if it makes you feel better to do so, call the hospital for some advice from a professional about it.
You should find that you start feeling better soon, so don't worry about this.

I experienced heavy bleeding with large clots two weeks after the delivery of my first daughter. It happened when I least expected, while shopping and was definitely an unnerving experience. I immediately called my doctor, and he advised me that it's not abnormal. He told me to lie down with my feet slightly elevated and to monitor the bleeding. He said that if the bleeding remained heavy enough to saturate more than one pad an hour for over three hours that I would need to come in and possibly have a D and C or some other treatment to control the bleeding. In my case, the bleeding subsided after a little over an hour and everything was fine. I would still recommend that you contact your doctor for his/her advice.

It is normal to bleed quite heavily for a good 10-14 days after childbirth, and clots as large as a plum are commonplace too. If you have any strange smell or are in pain though contact your midwife or ring the delivery team for further advice.
I had a large clot after I thought everything had subsided with my daughter. Scared me to death but the delivery team soon put my mind at rest :-) They said if it wasn't bigger than an orange and I wasn't in pain or anything to 'Not panic' (yeah, right)!
Congratulations on your new baby-enjoy!

I had this too, I told my midwife and she took a vaginal swob, which came back to show i had an infection and i got antibiotics. It is normal to take a while to heal after first babies, I remember not being able to walk outside until day 5 after birth!... but 9 days is a bit long. I hope you feel better soon, just ask your midwife to check for infections, good luck! x ps i'm due my baby in 8 days!

Yes it is normal. Same thing happened to my brother's fiance. You're still healing and you'll bleed for awhile until the cervix and the other organ in the area have healed. Now, if you begin to have dizziness or faintness, call your doctor immediately.

Sorry hun I don't know as I haven't had my baby yet but ring your midwife/doctor as the other girls have suggested.
Just wanted to say to Random - DON'T READ THE PREGNANCY QUESTIONS if it freaks you out!!! Not quite sure why men come on here unless it's to ask a question on behalf of their partners - bit weird if you ask me!

i was unfortunate to bleed for over 3 months after i had my daughter and had to take tablets to thin the blood.i suggest if this continues to see your doctor. i also noticed the more active i was the bleeding got worse, so try to take it easy.
