With the hot weather and the air conditioner running, the water level in my 20 gallon tank is evaporating. How long should I let the pitcher of water sit before adding it to tank ? I did add the chemicals to it.

just make sure the water is the same temp as the tankwater, and has water conditioner in it and you can put it in whenever you feel the need!

as long as the metals in the tapwater are neutralized, you dont need to let it sit out. if the water is not the same temp as the tank water, the fish could go into shock.

Since it's the summer you shouldn't really need to worry about letting it sit longer than the time it takes to warm up but in the winter you should definitely wait 24 hours if possible. In the winter the water can become saturated with a lot more gases resulting in the gas bubble disease.

Since water conditioners are readily available chlorine/chloramine isn't really an issue but saturated gases are.

water conditioners (dechlorinatros) work instantly and you can add it to the tank right away. Aging water is a hangover from an older era before conditioners and is not necessary any longer.

if you have put your chemicals in already, you can add it right away

What I always do is I add "Easy Balance" as directed to the tank and about 10 minutes later I pour in the water needed into my tank (I use bottled water though), I have never lost a fish when I did it that way

Hope that helps
Good luck

Sodium thiosulfate, which is the main ingredient in dechlorinators, works almost instantly. A bit of water current ensures that is spreads out quickly through the container, so you can stir it or shake it and in seconds it should be ready if you dosed correctly.
