There is no best brand. I really like Porter-Cable and you can't beat Rigid's guarantee, but every brand tends to have some tool that they just nailed.
Just stay away from the $20 saw, for example, from the auto parts store. Its like if you want to learn to be a musician on an instrument that won't stay tuned and sounds bad. Its no fun and you'll probably quit.
So start small. One good tool at a time will do you more good than 3 crappy ones. You get what you pay for.

Depends on the tool, and is it a Power Tool or a hand tool.
I like Dewalt for my orbital sander.
Ryobi for my jigsaw.
Stanley is my hand plane
Denali For my "medium duty" clamps
Craftsman my Rotary Tool.
For the most part it is Personal Preference and how it feels and performs for you + Budget.
Go to a hardware store and try out a few brands of a specific tool - do some research to see what others think/experienced, and make an informed purchase.

There is not one best brand of tools. Different tools have different "feels" and quality for what you are trying to do. Plumbing tools are an example. I like Ridgid tools for most things but Imperial Eastman benders.

For hand tools I pick Stanley every time. They have the largest range of high quality hand tools, readily available. For power tools I go with Bosch, in almost every tool test I have read Bosch wins every time.
