Yes, a person can learn all 2,400 chords and more, coupled with the names of the notes on each string and not know a quarter note from a quarter horse.

The person can learn to change chords in any given key to the appropriate chords within that key and memorize them--not knowing the Circle of Fifths or why the subordinate chords make up a key signature.

The person not willing to learn music theory can hamper their progression as they wish, for they will always have to rely upon their ear for the nuances of music. They will have to ask someone else what key signature a particular song is to be played because they wouldn't know a key signature from a house key.

It is possible, and is common, but the lack of such knowledge can be most limited.

Hi there,

I have known a few people that can do it by ear. They can hear the songs and manage to play them back simply by ear. But to be truly successful at playing the guitar I think reading music would help and lessons as well.

All the best!

You can play tabs. Tabs tell you what fret to play on which string, so there's really no musical background info needed. And chord diagrams will tell you which frets to put your finger on and then just strum.

Rhythms may be a little bit harder, but that's basically it. So, kinda yeah.
