Contemporary usually means in the present. Contemporary fiction tells a story written about today. People who are contemporaries are of a similar age.

In the same time frame. Such as, Davie Crockett and Sam Houston were contemporaries. Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein were contemporaries (writing during the same time).

Contemporary literature is writing that encompasses the current time (the present). Anything written about someone or something in the present. These writings will pass from contemporary in a few years.

"Dracula in Manhattan," circa 2000 would be considered contemporary horror/paranormal.
