I am a junior in high school who wants to go into the design field. However I don't really know if I want to go into advertising, marketing, or some other media. Is visual communications a good major since it is more general? Could I get a good job from that major with just a bachleors degree? Also does anyone know any good universities with this major in the midwest?

I'd advise majoring in something more broad based like Accounting (the more complex the tax laws get the more Accountants are going to be needed) or Business Administration then taking Visual Communications as a minor. I won't advise Information Technology or Computer Science right now because it seems like everybody and their brother are getting into those fields. Nor would I advise the Engineering Fields because of the way we are losing our industrial base right now making the job market for Engineers and Engineering Technicians shrink.

What I like about your question more than anything else is your very, very shrewd comment about "a good major since it is more general". Wherever possible go for a degree which is foundational. Which teaches you fundamentals which you can then apply in many areas, not a narrow training for one area.
