Example: I enjoyed a championship for the Mets while I was little. Since then they've been mediocre and downright awful at times, until recently. With Wright & Reyes, plus the signings of Beltran, Delgado, & Pedro, all kinds of people are Mets fans.

When that kind of thing happens, do you enjoy the fact that your team is doing so well that more fans are jumping on the bandwagon?

Or do these new fans annoy you by never living through the tough times your team has been through? They're only around when things are good. How dare they cheat the game like that? This goes for any sports you'd like to talk about, but I spend more time in baseball and thought the Mets were a perfect example.

I'll be honest with you, I hate it. Speaking as a Red Sox fan, we're a group that gets a lot of negative labels & disparaging comments made about the way we behave, which is mostly based on people we don't even consider real fans. Almost all true Red Sox fans can't stand Ben Affleck, for example. Or I'll be talking to someone who says they're a fan and they're all, my favorite player is David Ortiz, I've loved him since 2004. It's just really irritating.

It's easy to be a fan of a team that wins. That's why there are so many "idiot" Yankee fans. To be honest, it's the "media bias" that ESPN puts out that makes all of these fair weather fans. The mets have been awful for a number of years, but as soon as they start getting good again, it's all ESPN can talk about. Mets this, Mets that, Mets are the pick to win the division, Mets are the pick for the world series, etc, etc, etc. Now its the tigers and brewers. and around here (im from the KC area), there are a ton of tiger and brewer fans coming out of the woodwork.

However, it's not so prevalent in baseball as much as it is in other sports. Football is the worst. How many Colts fans were there 5-6 years ago? none.... how many Patriot fans were there 5-6 years ago? none.

I find that the "real" baseball fan will stick with their team. Thats why Cubs fans are true baseball fans (even if they're the only people on earth who think Derrick Lee is any good). It's all of these "casual" fans that jump from team to team, whoever happens to be on ESPN the most that year.

There are always going to be those casual fans that jump on the "bandwagon" when a team starts playing well. It is never a bad thing to have a stadium full of fans to cheer on your team in an exciting game, and it is really good for the players to have the stadium jumping. The biggest thing that should put a smile on your face is that you know you are a true fan and stuck with the team through the good times as well as the not so good times. Also, if you are a true fan even going to the ballgame when your team is losing is better than most things in life.

There were a lot of bandwagon White Sox fans in 2005, but it didn't really bother me too much...except when these so called "fans" try to act like experts on the team. If they are just casual fans who want to jump on for the ride, that's fine.

Sure, these bandwagon fans are only around for the good times, but a true fan has a much higher level of joy for their successful team if they've been through the bad times as well....so you can take solace in that fact if the bandwagoneers are bothering you.

No,

I know what you mean. I have been a Mets season ticket holder since 1979, and can remember sitting in Shea in the rain in 1982 when they were a last place team, with an attendance of 5600; two years later when Gooden, Hernandez, and Strawberry came, and they won 90 games, you couldn't get a ticket. The same thing happened again in 2005.

Where were these people when Art Howe was here stinking up the field in 2003?

I only like diehard fans of a team and not the bandwagoners. I stick with my Reds no matter what!
