Is it legal to, say, sign a cheque or any other such document, with your alias? For example, if you were an author who went by a pseudonym rather than your real name, would you be able to sign a legal document with that name?

Not as long as there is no intent to mislead or commit a crime (particularly fraud) and the instrument requires no "sworn" statement.

Many people have several names they go under. Even with social security, I noticed that my g-mother was asked if she had used any other name. If she had (which she didn't) they would have had to search that name and if benefits were paid under it, she would have the same rights as if she had used one name only. As far as your "cheque" - well you opened the account with your name. And before you opened it, you had to provide proof of who you are.
Why would you want to sign your name with an 'alias' anyway? Usually when you are trying to do something illegal, you get caught anyway.
Many authors use other names than their own. There are copyright laws that protect
them.

No it's not legal.

Any official document should be signed with your legal name.

An alias is just an elegant "nickname" used for artistic or comercial purposes but signing any contract or check would be ilegal, besides any contract would be not valid if you don't use your legal name to sign.

You must use your LEGAL signature on checks or other legal documents. Authors are paid by their publishing companies using their legal name. Theoretically, you could have a checking account with a pseudonym, but the bank would have to approve, and they would have your legal name and signature attached to the account.
