First off you don't need to know the language of the country you're teaching in. These days classes are taught almost entirely in the Target Language which means you introduce, explain and practice in English. This is called Full Immersion and essentially you are trying to put the student in the same kind of linguistic environment that a native speaker learns their own language. In fact, it does the students good. To communicate they MUST speak English and that's what it's all about. So the bottom line is that you should choose where to go on your preferences rather than a language you can learn. To teach in both countries you normally need a BA degree and a TEFL/TESOL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate to get a visa. However in China you can sometimes get away with less although it's a bit more hassle to find work.

Sorry to be a pain but teaching for a few weeks in China (my direct experience) would e difficult. Schools, colleges and Universities close for at lest six weeks usually because its too hot for worthwhile work. I hae less ecperience of Japan but ghuess the same sitution applies thee. The other point you need to bear in mind is that teaching is more than a 4/5 weeks commitment for serious language classes. Hving said that it is SOMETIMES possible to pick up individual students who need to maintain their languae developmetn during the long summer holidays. Check the local newspapers or websites

I've taught in China for four years and it will be very easy to get a summer teaching position. You can get a summer teaching position without a teaching certificate and in some cases even without a degree; the schools are mainly looking for native speakers. Dave's ESL website is excellent. Here is an additional site that is very good and a few specific job offers:
http://www.teachingjobchina.com/
Here are 3 postings where you can teach an English summer camp:

Also, to get help with your China visa you can visit:

If you have any questions, speak to the manager, Michael Ma. They are very fast and also reliable.
To get your airline tickets, you can get the best price from: China Youth Travel Service in San Francisco:

maybe your first step is to contact the state dept. of foreign affairs in your state,or maybe the us embassies in both countries,i am sure you will need a passport and probably some shots before you travel overseas and being that you wish to teach also contact the college campus where you finished etc, to see if they have openings,i often see where foreign countries are looking for teachers for the summer in education magazines
