Most of the yarns sold in places like Wal Mart or K Mart are what is considered "mill ends". Meaning that the yarn splits, is knotted together, is dyed unevenly, etc. Try some of the yarn websites. Lion Brand Yarn is pretty decent without being a lot of money. If you're going to put a lot of time into making something, you want it to look good and hold up to use, right?

Mainstay Crafts Yarn has been discontinued. It used to be sold at Wal Mart, but there were so many complaints about the quality that they quit stocking it.

You can still find it on e-bay, and at some discontinued merchandise outlets, but why would you want to? I found it to be very thin in places, and had threads knotted together along the length.

Simply soft and Knit Pick are still available at Wal Mart and they are much better quality.
