i noticed the rattling after i installed the caliphers. i jacked up my truck so that i could turn the wheel, and noticed that the brake pads were loose. this is the same for the opposite front wheel. i have a 91 ford bronco.

Check the sliders/caliper bushings. If the seals are worn out the calipers will rattle around. If you take the tire off grasp the whole caliper assembly and try to rock it. It should not move more than 1/16" or so. I would check that first, if you have a bad slider rebuilt caliper assemblies aren't expensive if you do the work yourself. Even cheaper if you bebuild.

You may also try premium brake pads. A good set will have shims to reduce noise, but it sounds to me like you are hearing more than just "regular" brake noise.

you can use anti rattle shims, your can also use a spray on product that puts a layer of tacky film acting as a cushion. Also, you may want to investigate the idea that you may have not installed them correctly, and or possibly gotten the wrong pads entirely. No all that uncommon, If you put in account that most folks that work at the parts store are under twenty and have no automotive skills. Not always the case but happens more than you think when the computer does the thinking for someone. The computer says a part number, they look it up, some times grabbing the wrong component, and or mis read numbers, or a computer entry error. Better safe then sorry.

Their are shims that can be used to take up slack another way is that their are ears on the ends of most brake pads take the wheel off and take a hammer and tap the ears to have them close onto the caliper this will snug them up to elimanate any rattling also using permatex brake pad spray on the back of the pads will cause them to stick. this will tighten them up. Your rattling may come from a loose pin or hold down bolt or i think on ford products in those days you used a wedge type hold down , rubber on the inside and a steel outer which you wedge into the opening. These wedges must be installed properly because if you will look at them you will notice that the two that you must install are different check your book. if installed incorrectly these will be pushed out of the opening causing your caliper to be free.

Your local Advance and Aut Zone stores sell ANTI Rattle shims. That fit between the cailper and the pad when installed they will or should take up the extra space and make the noise go away.

you put the rotors on and then the calipers, and if you didn't get all the dirt and rust and things out of the way of the mounting of the calipers it will feel tight, whenyou are tightning them, and you have put the dirt and stuff on the mntg platform... remove then and clean all very good, and re torgue the mntg bolts to specs... and check the rotors for being warped, and these need to be installed and torgued in a proper sequence...and it will warp them too.......
