Why does every religious confession feel the need to protect its rigts? What rights exactly? How do the rights of a Maronite differ from those of a Shiite? And those of a Shiite from a Sunnite's? At the end we all seek the same things: food, shelter, peace...Till when will religion remain an issue, in Lebanon?

This is due to mainly two reasons. The nature of religion and how it is implemented at in Lebanon.
Firstly, religion itself isn't about common sense or scientific knowledge but rather based on what is called faith. In religion no logic applies. It relies on what is known as "miracles" and baseless stories so don't try to associate logic with religion to begin with.
Then comes the dual of authority in Lebanon and how religion is implemented. In the west the above religion effect was minimized through giving the clergy men a break from their civil responsibilities and associating these responsibilities to secular states instead. In Lebanon unfortunately the clergy are integrated within the state to provide civil services to citizens. For example, a Christian finds himself forced to marry in church; same goes for the Muslim. This has led to a dangerous duality in authority.
This duality in authority has added a serious trait to religion in Lebanon. Religion is more than simple faith which one follows and practices. It became as an identity of the person born into it and "tainted" with . In Lebanon religion comes within one big package which extends identifying your faith to your political directions, social place, and another whole set of characteristics used to stereotype an individual.

There are so many religions because Lebanon is a diverse strip of land by the Mediterranean, there's a lot of history which allows many years for religions and ideas to develop. According to Muslims, Christians will go to hell whether or not they drink. Spirituality is everywhere in Lebanon, just go up to the mountains for some Christian spirituality, or to the mosque's in Beirut for some Muslim spirituality. God is perceived differently by each religion, everyone says something different. I think there are psychological benefits to prayer to any type of deity. I hope my answer wasn't offensive.

When people drop the 1945 mentality and stop acting like every day is the end of the world, and they and only they are the correct ones, and when there is a separation of religion from politics, then and only then will this crap-o-la be put to rest. And the mentality that heinous acts committed in the name of anyone living up above the clouds, is false and immoral and a total lie. The ideology and misinterpretations of what are supposed to be "holy" is totally out of control. People need to grow up and and act like humans not Neanderthals. Thank you.

religion will always remain an issue anywhere, as long as people use it to control other people with it in whatever way.
this includes ANY religion in ANY nation.
some people are simply not willing to accept that others have the right to have their own opinion.
sometimes religion is terribly misused
sometimes religion is terribly misinterpreted
and
sometimes religion leads to having a terrible politicle landscape

Because it's political relevance is planted in you as a child, the only think that will decrease its inportance is a secular regime.
As long as on this level we are divided into religions we will spend our time counting how much we have and how much they have.
