i have a pair of german blue rams and i am trying to get them to breed, do they prefer live plants or are plastic plants going to be enough? i also read that they like a cave to be able to breed in is this true? i have some more jagged rocks in the tank should i get more smooth rocks or does that not matter? thank you.

Caves are their preferred breeding sites. I like to use clean clay flower pots and PVC pipe to provide caves for smaller cave breeders like rams.

It will not matter if you have live or plastic plants, just as long as there is plenty of cover in the tank.

I wouldn't consider Blue or Columbian Rams as a centerpiece. They are too small. They blend in too well and you even have to look for them. I have 2 pair in a 40 gallon and the only time I really see them is feeding time. They are one of the first in line. They spend most of the day by the driftwood and plants and just pick eat. They are sensitive to water conditions. You have to keep up on your testing and water changes when needed. Haven't lost one yet and have had them for bout 7 months. Neither one of the two pair I have ever mated. They just hang out and interact with the other pair now and then. They just flare at them and show off. They do have a short life compared to other fish, three years they say. But I enjoy watching them and hopefully one pair will try to mate.

German Blues are very hard to breed. They are a delecate fish with easy ability to get sick if their conditions are not suitable. They need just the right temps and just the right ph, etc. I suggest you do a whole lot of studying on them and find a really good breeder of them before you attempt to breed. They need all their conditions met before they will breed well for you, if they breed at all. Hope that helps.

Magicman is right about the pots and pipes. Make sure your water is pristine or the eggs will get fungus on them and die. I would recommend making a large sponge filter for your tank for the biological filtration, and the sponge will not suck up your babies the way a standard filter will.
