Hi!

Not sure about the very first time second hand smoke was highlighted as an issue, but I recall about ten years ago a civil servant in Stockport, Greater Manchester UK suing the local council for a substantial sum because they did not curb smoking and she became ill due to secondary inhalation.

Following the case, whenever people lit up near me I would ask them for a cigarette.

"But you don't smoke!"

"I know, but I've heard being close to people who do is worse for my health than smoking myself, so I want to light up".

Most put their cigarettes away.

Good wishes.

Second hand smoke has always been an issue in any home that contains both smokers & non smokers. The non smoker will always be some what offended by the effects of the second hand smoke, and thier usually the ones who have to clean the nicotine stains off the walls & the windows. Not much to like there. The first to complain was probably a baby whose mother was a smoker. I guarantee the baby don't like the cigarettes! As a public issue, the problem grew as the population grew. Ever been in a room filled with smokers where you can't hardly see in front of you? Not pleasant. Not even if you're a smoker ourself. Anyway, I believe that if a peson wants to be a smoker that it should be his or her right to choose to do so, however, if there are others around that are truly offended by the second hand smoke, then the smoker should take his or her smoke to another area to where theres no offense made!

Probably when the anti smoking people tried to go after the big tobacco companies and ran into a brick wall, then they decided to to go after the likes of you and I because we don't have all the financial backing or lobbyists as the big boys...
