It is up to you to control your emotions. If the question is one deliberately asked to hit your hot button, then your are being manipulated or controlled.

Being controlled by whom? By the asker of the question or your own self answering it?

I figure that I can express myself logically 100% of the time if I allow myself enough time to think through a topic and look at as many sides of the issue as possible. Once I know where I stand and what I choose to believe in, then I actually lose the necessity to express myself emotionally.

If something angers or upsets me, it's up to me to investigate why and come to understand myself. The source may be either a rational or irrational. I've found, however, that all negative emotions are irrational as they highlight my perceived inability to cope with reality as it is.

Now, communicating emphatically is appealing to another person's emotions. I am wary of this as I understand that trying to bypass my intellect by appealing to my emotions is an attempt at manipulation. Watch almost any infomercial, political speech, or sermon, and you'll see what I mean.

It would be very disheartening to hear that both emotion and intellect are not in play in any response. One can be overly emotional, but can also be overly intellectual. In either case, we are absolutely being controlled. We are controlled in every facet of life--there are certain things you cannot say/do everywhere, and if you cross that invisible line, either emotionally or intellectually, you can be in trouble.

No.
Sometimes an emotional response is required instead of using one's intellect. If one only used their intellect to respond to others, they would seem cold and aloof to others. Intellect comes from the brain, and emotions come from the heart.

It can seem that way, but in the end it is your own choice to allow the emotions to control the answer that makes it happen. I do know that, usually, when I let emotions of anger or disbelief rule my answers I would be better off not!

It's just a little of both and yes I suppose that sometimes we may all need to chill out, but if we are a feeling person that is a hard thing to do at times

Psychology would argue that the two are connected -- thoughts (what you think) leads to emotions (what you feel).
