Unfair to compare them as they are differant styles of bowler. Warne is a leg spinner and Murali is an offspinner.

Murali will undoubtedly end up with far more test wickets than Warne but this isn't the only indicator of a bowlers talent.

Not looking at stats as i can't be bothered to look them up.

Shane Warne has been part of the best side in the world undoubtedly throughout all of his career and has bowled alongside some true greats, namely Glenn Mcgrath. Bowling alongside people like this means less oppurtunity to take wickets as the great seamers he plays alongside will have had their fill before Warney even gets a sniff.

Conversely throughout Murali's career he has been playing alongside a bowling attack nowhere near the standard of himself. This means a lot more wicket taking oppurtunitys for himself as the other bowlers aren't as skilled.

However these two factors can be reversed and it could be argued that the better bowling attack Warne played alongside led to more pressure on the batsmen forcing them into more mistakes making it easier for Warne to get wickets. Similarly with Murali, the inferior bowling attack meant the batsmen were full of confidence and better equipped to face Murali.

Also take into account fitness, Shane Warne is clearly not a natural athlete and that could have adversely affected his bowling (this has no bearing on his natural ability as a bowler) Wheareas Murali is a much more athletic cricketer than Warne.

There is also the lottery of which nation they represent, this may not be so now but i'd be prepared to wager that throughout his whole cricketing life Warne will have had access to proper coaching and equipement due to being from a 1st world country, whereas Murali comes from a relatively impoverished country where perhaps he didn't have coaching until he was well into his teens.

Then there is the prickly matter of Murali's suspect action, it has been cleared by the ICC before but if Murali had been playing a few years before he actually had, he would not have been able to play with that action. Did this action give him an unfair advantage?

Then there is the pitches they play on, in Australia during home matches (were they spend most of their time) the pitches are generally hard and flat favouring batsmen driving on the up and when there is help for the bowlers it is often for the seamers. Whereas in Sri Lanka in home matches (were they spend most of their time) the pitches are generally dusty and cracked favouring spin bowlers such as Murali.

As you can see there are to many factors and variables to pick one of these bowlers as being undoubtedly the greatest.

I prefer Warney as he is a more complete cricketer (ie' better batsman, better fielder) but in bowling i can't pick between the two.

Shane Warne clearly is a superior bowler

there is a huge shadow of doubt that hangs over murali, because he has been called for chucking and does have a suspect action.

Shane Warnes record is amazing especially against the other top countries on their turf,

Murali rakes up good figures but he plays mostly against the lower countries at home where the pitches are made to suit him.

In Australia we have a variety of pitches in all the states. the SCG is the spinners pitch in Aus traditionally. the GABBA is good for the faster bowlers and the WACA is a fastbowlers paradise, the MCG does spin on days 4 and 5, but in the last few years the aussies have won the test by that stage and the ADELAIDE OVAL (best cricket ground in the world) is a batsmens paradise.

Shane Warne, although they are both great bowlers. The problem with muralitharan will always be his action. Even if his arm is straight when he lets the ball go, his action will always be under suspicion, since he holds the ball like a leg spinner, but spins it out of his forefinger. I've tried his action and it is truly amazing what spin you can get out of it. The problem is keeping your arm straight at the time of delivery. Shane Warne has a better action.

Though S.K. Warne holds the record for most wickets in test cricket, I consider M.Muralitharan as a better bowler compared to Warne due to following reasons:

1) Warne has taken 708 test wickets in 145 test matches, whereas Muralitharan has taken 700 wickets in 113 test matches.

2) Muralitharan has got better economy rate as compared
to Warne in test cricket.

3) Muralitharan has tkaen 5 wickets and 10 wickets on more
occasions as compared to Warne.

4) Muralitharan is far better bowler in ODI cricket also as he
has taken 455 wickets in from 297 ODI matches whereas Warne has taken only 293 wickets from 194 ODI matches.

Murali is better. He is the most prolific wicket taker in the hystory of cricket. The biggest thing in his favour is that he has proved himself under all circumstances. He has done well in all countries, against all countries. He has seen a lot of tough times. All those allegations of illegal bowling style has just more mentally stronger. Shane Warne is one of the greatest while Murali is 'THE GREATEST'. Shane Warne has never done well in INDIA or against the Indian batsmen because of the pressure of playing in India or because of the aggressive nature of India batsmen against spin bowling while Murali's record against India is decent. The bottomline is that Murali is slightly better than the great Shane Warne. Surprisingly my favourite is WARNY because he's a funny character

Definitely Murali even as per the arguments of ledzeppelinben.
No one else can match his over 6 Wkts per test.Warne has just below 5/test.
His economy rate,ODI records are better than Warne's.
Even allowing for different conditions in which they operated the above 6/test is well clear and ahead of Warne.
