My family is debating on where to go on vacation. We need a place on the east coast within 200 miles of Connecticut. Any suggestions?

Scranton, PA. The Hub of the Pocono Northeast. You can take the freaky-cool coal mine tour; visit Steamtown USA National Park and ride a vintage train through the mountains; see a triple-A baseball game at Montage Stadium (the newest and best AAA stadium in that part of the country); stay at the new Great Wolf Lodge in the nearby Poconos or in the downtown Radison--which is a redone 19th Century train station. The Houdini Museum is there, as is some of the best pizza in the country (and I lived in NYC for 20 years). Check-out Nay Aug Park for its old-school carnival rides, its clean, huge community pool (my kids love the water slides) and its rather dowdy but fascinating museum. Since the NBC sitcom "The Office" is situated in Scranton (the fictional Dunder Mifflin paper company), some of the show's stars have been visiting for regular autograph signings at the Steamtown Mall. Must-sees (must-eats included) include Cooper's Seafood House, Quints Army & Navy Store, the Montage Ski area and resort, Chick's Diner, any and every pizza restaurant in the section called Old Forge and, make note, Coney Island Texas Wieners (the original)...addictive fare (you'll drive back just to get more) in a dining establishment basically unchanged since the 1920s. Lake Wallenpaupack (sp?) is the nation's largest man-made body of water, good swimming and fishing with lots of woodsy, private lakeshore on which to while away a sunny afternoon. You can rent a motorboat, a pontoon or a canoe for the day as well. Lake Scranton is a protected reservoir that features a paved path that winds all around it for an excellent few miles of hiking or running, and parking everywhere--just as in South Park--is ample, day or night. Speaking of night, the nightlife is abundant and furious, with plenty of (mainly Irish-themed) bars, pubs and clubs in the very walk-able downtown area. Best of all, you won't even come close to breaking the bank. Scranton and environs is a famously working-class area and you can feed a family of four, well, for about the same cost as a few cocktails in more touristy locales like Cape Cod, and for the price of the worst hotel in (outer) NYC you can stay at the best hotel in Scranton. From southern CT (I've done the drive many times), you're talking just over two-hours on what is for the most part a very scenic drive.

Look for the unexpected destinations. They always turn-out the best memories.

Good luck.

Canada - anywhere in Canada - it's nice and safe there, cooler temperatures and they have polar bears you can pet.
