Draino or The Works. They work really good but be careful with them because they will sting your hands. I would go with Draino though.

Baking soda and white vinegar. Pour some of the baking soda into the drain in question, then follow with some of the vinegar. Wait until the bubbling stops and then run water into the drain. You may have to repeat several times if it's a real bad clog. After that do this when drains become slow as reg maint.

Use an enzyme drain cleaner such as Draincare by Zep. Comes in liquid or powder. Enzyme cleaners cling to and "eat" organic clogs in piping. Caustic cleaners eat a small hole and go down the drain pipe leaving residue to start another clog.

Draino really works well--make sure to use the entire bottle (and get rid of the bottle immediatey that might have some left inside) if you have pets or kids--don't leave any leftovers forgotten in a closet somewhere cause it's so so so toxic.

Have you tried plunging the drain with a plunger? I know it sounds funny, but last night I'd given up hope that my clogged sink and garbage disposal was going to unclog itself (haha), and out of sheer desperation, I filled the sink 1/4 way with hot hot water and plunged the sink. I pushed slowly down on the plunger and pulled up quick, and it took care of it!!!!! I couldn't believe I was going to call the plumber and get a big plumber bill...so try it before buying the draino! Good luck :)

Honestly, even if you got some black market super commercial stuff, you'd do better to clean it out if you can. If this is the bathroom sink, pull out the stopper. Its attached to a rod that is screwed in to the back of the drain pipe just below the sink. the other end of this rod is clipped to the push/pull rod that operates the stopper. Take this apart, pull out the stopper and scrape off all that hair and gunk that toothpaste turns into. Its better than dumping dangerous chemicals down the drain and you'll be good as new not just better.
