I am moving in a couple of months to Vegas and unfortunately I won't be able to come and visit before the move. I'm not bringing much with me just my computer and my clothes everything else is being sold and my computer will be shipped. I don't have a car but plan to get one a couple of months (hopefully) after I move and have found a job. My question is because I don't have a car and probably will be working on the strip (baker, pastry cook) I wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions for any extended stay type motels where I will be accessible to buses (no more than $200wk) just till I can find a job and get stabled. I'm nervous and want to know if anyone has every came out here the same way... no car, no job, no apartment? Please help!!! and thanxs in advance.

I moved to Vegas under similar circumstances over 20 years ago - no job, no car, no apartment. I did have one friend here but I didn't live with him or borrow money from him. If you rent from the budget suites on Stardust Rd you will be a block away from the Strip and could either walk to work or just catch one bus instead of two, the rent there is $199 a week. If you are an experienced baker I would imagine you'll find work pretty easily, but I have only worked for a casino for 4 months, 18 years ago.

When I worked in a casino (the El Rancho), I was able to eat there for free in the employee cafeteria, I think that's pretty standard. I imagine cook staff probably does even better than other employees in that regard. There are other meal deals around town that can save you money, and the Budget Suites I mentioned are on he lower priced end of the Strip.

One thing bad about the location is it's not near any grocery stores. There are other rent by the week places on West Tropicana that could be an alternative and closer to a grocery store, although you may need two buses to get to work unless you are working near the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana. I don't like the neighborhoods on the east side of the Strip as much.

Good luck, people have done what you are doing before. It's not easy, but save your money, don't gamble a dime away, and there's hope. BTW, not to brag but to inspire, I now live in a 3000 square foot house on an acre of land 60 miles outside of Las Vegas.

I would do some checking in the local paper you can try and find a room to rent or weeklies as well. There are many weeklies here in Las Vegas because it is such a transient town. Also check the papers website for jobs that are available, if you are looking to work in one of the casinos on the strip it could take 2-3 months for the full process. Also you noted that you were looking to be a baker / pastry cook, here in Las Vegas, you will need to get a health card and possibly a sheriffs card, approx ($25-$30 ea) ( not to sure with the sheriffs card) But once you get a job, they will give you the paperwork for whatever cards you might need. So start putting in applications on the internet for the hotels that you are interested in and look forward to coming to Las Vegas. Here is the website for Budget Suites http://www.budgetsuites.com/

Hope this helps.

I moved here without ever having been here before, but I rented an apartment before I got here so I didn't have to do the weekly motel thing - and they cost $300 per week for the cheapest ones and they are located far away from the strip - you would need a car then.

As for cars, Vegas doesn't have great deals and the registration and insurance here are some of the nation's most expensive. I brought my own car luckily.

You should have at least $5000 in savings to help get you through the first couple of months until you get stabilized or decide to go home. That money should be used carefully, also, because it will be gone quickly.

I suggest you check out the classifieds and try to set up job interviews for when you plan on arriving - your success on finding a job will be all that separates you from the many homeless people living here.. those who moved here with only the clothes on their backs and expected miracles to happen.

you should probably go on craigslist and find a roommate close to the strip if you're willing to pay 200/week on a motel. i actually know someone who needs a roommate and they don't live too far from the strip w/ buslines accessible as well as shopping. he's a quiet guy who's girlfriend just left him. you'd have your own room and bathroom. if you're interested post another question on here w/ your email addy and i'll relay the message.

Make sure you have plenty of money/ charge cards to live on while you look for work. The bus service is not like it is in major cities. Best of luck!
