Here are some tips but not in chronological order:

1) Go to the major cities such as Hollywood or New York. The majority of work is there.
2) Get an agent and someone known in the industry (and may not be cheap).
3) Have a body of work that talent scouts can see. If you have appeared as an extra or credited for something on IMDB.com so that they know you are well established, more work will come to you.
4) Have patience. Most of the target audience are adults. You have plenty of time to find a lot of work. There may be some roles that require a teenager but not as many as adults.
5) Have a backup plan. If this doesn't pan out, try other things you will be good at that you can focus for the rest of your life. Fred Grundy of "Love Boat" fame is no longer in the industry because he felt like doing something else other than acting. He became an Iowa Congressman.

Does Charlotte have a film school or a university with a film dept.? Check it out and if they do, see if the student filmmakers are casting. If you get cast, they will usually give you a copy of the film. If it's any good, you can use it to showcase your work.

if you want to be in commercials and films you need to audition for an agency. if you want to get some more experience, look for auditions for local plays. i'm 12 and live in a really small town but there is a local theatre i do plays at and i also audition for plays is other cities close to where i live.
check the arts section of the paper and look for auditions for plays or local student films.

You may book a role in a play.
Requirements are VERY specific for actors in commercials.
