WV took a very long time to become a state compared to the rest of the East Coast , my question is why? i know the reason for the west coast states being late is because they wernt really ours for awhile we had to fight or buy them over time. but it would seem like all of the east coast was US territoriy for awhile. In case you dont know WV is 35th in order of statehood , while the other eastrn states were in the first 20 or so.

It was part of Virginia (hence the name) for a very long time until the Civil War when that part of the state sympathized with The North and the other part sympathized with the South. So that's when the split happened. So it was admitted to the Union in 1863.

Geolicious is correct. When the south seceded from the "union", counties in northern Va voted to remain part of the union http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_virginia#Separation_from_Virginia .
