There is a risk of TSS to using tampons and yes, if you get it, you could die. Using them at 14 is a little young, but some girls do it safely.
If you decide to use tampons, then there are rules to follow that reduce your risks.
1. Never leave one in for more than a few hours at a time. No more than 5 hours, definitely. Change them often to prevent bacteria from building up.
2. Use the lowest absorbancy that you can. Regulars are the lowest and have been proven to cause TSS less often.
3. If you have a heavy flow, use a pad with a tampon to help control it. Never try to use more than one and never go anywhere without enough in your purse to cover you while you're out of the house.
4. Bathe daily. You probably already do this, but during that time it is especially important as it helps keep you clean of excess bacteria.
If you can, talk to your mom/guardian about this issue, or a school counselor or the mom of a good friend. She can probably tell you more of what to look out for. DEFINITELY stop using them if you feel sore or red down there or if you get a painful place that is not a cramp in your abdomen, then see a doctor. With prompt treatment, doctor's can most likely help you avoid serious complications.

Toxic shock syndrome is a real risk, but it's very, very rare. If you leave a tampon in for a long time, the tampon and the blood soaked into it provide a good breeding ground for bacteria and that's how tss can happen (it's caused by a bacteria.) The best way to prevent it is to choose the smallest size that is adequate for your flow, and change your tampon regularly (don't leave it in any longer than 3 or 4 hours - don't use them for overnight.) If you google tss you'll find how rare it is. And other than that, tampons are great... way better than bulky uncomfortable pads!

Hon, BILLIONS of women use tampons. They wouldn't use them if a lot of people were dying from them.
TSS is a very rare condition. There are less than 10 cases in the U.S. a year. That's all.
There are a lot of stories going around with teens about how tampons cause cancer, AIDS, etc. These are WRONG, too. They've never been true.
Read this article. It tells the TRUTH about tampons and TSS:

It's quite unlikely that you would get TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome) from the proper use of tampons.
You can use tampons at any age; the trick is to get one that properly fits your lifestyle and blood-flow. If you have a very light flow, then you need to get the smallest absorbency they have.
If you have a heavier flow, get a larger absorbency, but remember to change them often (every 4 hours). Never go to sleep with one in, because that just leaves bacteria and unwanted bodily fluids in your body.
And for the record, anyone (virgins or not) can use tampons. They don't make you "lose" your virginity either.

TSS is rare. When the tampon is not changed enough is the problem. Remember to change it and you will be fine.

yes it is ok to wear them. but i recently found out that women think of white as clean but cotton is actually a beige color they bleach the cotton for it to look white but go to a store were they sell organics and they have the non bleached tampons . that type of chemicals should not go inside the body. but you can wear them but just make sure you wash your hands before inserting it and dont wear a tampon all day
