I think you have a juvenile Florida softshell turtle

They are very aggressive and not suitable as a pet unless you know what you are doing.
If this is a wild collected turtle please put it back where you found it.
I have one in my store as a show piece, he was brought over to the UK as an aquarium turtle in the 1980's.

Yes, this is a florida softshell. I used to have two of them, and they are very difficult to keep as others have said. They are really neat creatures, but unfortunately easily get sick I think. (they are also more aggressive than a lot of aquatic turts, and have those long necks that they can and will whip around to bite you!) I tried my best to provide the right environment for the ones I had, but still had troubles in the end. If this is a wild caught turtle, you are better off returning him to the wild. Definitely not a good turtle to start out with!

As everyone else has said its a softshell. They bite very hard and are difficult to keep. It would be horrible as a first turtle since you dont know anything about them. You need special lights (basking and UVB) perfect substrate such as sand and adequate swimming space. They dont stay small like the one that you have so I urge you to put it back where you found it. Animals shouldnt be taken out of the wild when there are perfectly other good animals waiting to be adopted, EVEN turtles

Its a Florida softshell and you really should put it back. It is not one of the easier species to keep. They are completely aquatic and get pretty large (females are well over a foot). They are prone to skin infections that prove fatal and lastly they have a good bite and know how to use it.

I believe that is a softshelled turtle... I would NOT suggest keeping it as a pet, they can be harder to care for then other turtles... If you do decide to keep it, pleace visit allturtles.com and read through their forum and caresheets... They are very helpful and informative...

Best of luck!

That is wild. I'm not really sure. I've never seen one quite like that. I've seen the strawberry turtle, and the snapping turtles. That one is just so different. Maybe a box? I would suggest you look up on the internet for pictures of the box turtle? Interesting. Doesn't look like one that will be harmful to you, but I haven't a clue.
