The word hello is also credited to Thomas Edison specifically as a way to greet someone when answering the telephone; according to one source due to expressing his surprise with a misheard Hullo. Alexander Graham Bell initially used Ahoy (as used on ships) as a telephone greeting. However, in 1877, Edison wrote to T.B.A. David, the president of the Central District and Printing Telegraph Company of Pittsburg:
"Friend David, I do not think we shall need a call bell as Hello! can be heard 10 to 20 feet away. What you think? Edison - ."
By 1889 central telephone exchange operators were known as 'hello-girls' due to the association between the greeting and the telephone

i have read that the first person to speak on phone on the other end was thomas edisons friend.it was an trial, and he replyed by saying hello after receiving the call.and since then during all demonstrations the word hello had been used,so it became a practice.and people use the word hello.for example when i used the phone for the first time i saw that everybody says hello and so i said hello,we are following the practice.

I'm an Aussie so I say "G'Day! But a good mate of mine who lived up in the bush had an answering machine and when you dialed his number you got:
"Rain falleth upon the just
and rain falleth upon the unjust
but more rain falleth upon the just
than the unjust fella'
'cause the unjust steals
the justs umbrella"
I'm not here at the moment 'cause I'm in town buying a new umbrella

I say "Namasthe" when I receive a phone call. "Hello" also serves the same purpose of indicating the caller that his call is being attended... at the same time it greets the caller. How odd it will be if the phone rings... you lift the handset & remain silent... how odd it will be and the caller has to say Hello ...Hello...
